Quantum Dots : Solar energy conversion and cancer cell imaging

Semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) or so-called quantum dots (QDs) are of increasing importance in a wide range of technological applications due to their optical and electronic properties. Environmentally clean alternate energy resources have to be explored to meet our demand of clean energy in the near future. One of the main reasons for the growing interest in quantum dots is their use in cost effective solar cells, which have the possibility to increase the thermodynamic conversion efficiency. Quantum dots are an attractive alternative to the traditional organic dyes due to their broad excitation spectra, narrow emission spectra, and photo stability, which allows for multiplexed experiments. Semiconductor quantum dots with its tunable band edge offer new opportunities to harvest light energy in the entire visible region of solar light. Currently, quantum dots are being explored as biological imaging agents in vitro and in vivo. My research will be focusing on the synthesis of quantum dots and its applications in area of biology and electronics.
